But on which hand and finger should you wear an engagement and wedding ring, and how people around the world wear them?

 

Your engagement ring finger:

 

In many Western countries tracing back to the Ancient Romans, the engagement ring is worn on the left hand ring finger.

The belief was that this finger had a vein that ran directly to the heart, the Vena Amoris, meaning the ‘Vein of love’. The heart being at the center of emotions, this finger was considered to be the best finger to wear your engagement rings on.

It showed that your heart had been claimed by another, it was the symbol of your forever love.

The Wedding Band

 

If the engagement ring symbolizes a promise of marriage, the wedding band solidifies this promise.

The circle of a wedding ring has no beginning or end, it is considered a symbol of dedication and eternity of a lifetime partnership.

 

In Western cultures, just before the wedding, the engagement ring is transferred to the right hand ring finger, so the wedding ring can be worn closest to the heart, on the left hand.

After the ceremony, the engagement ring is placed on top of the new wedding band.

 

These are the traditional ways. Couples now are choosing their own styles.

Some join the wedding and the engagement rings permanently for them to become one. They have laser engraved their personal sound notes in the form of voice notes (sound waves) on their rings. Some have their personal message inscribed on the inner side of their rings. Regardless of how they are styled, the rings should be comfortable and sized properly.

A marquise diamond will accentuate the length. 

One can also consider a wide setting that will widen the look of the finger. It will look striking when supported with a great gem arrangement.

Longer and Fuller / Strong Knuckles

For a long and full shape, choose diamonds that are set from north to south. Its most flattering drawing the eye along, rather than across. 

Choosing a prominent setting will attract more attention to the strong knuckles, opt for a multiple band statement ring instead.

Fuller Fingers or Smaller Hands

Choose the more wide rectangular or emerald, princess cut, oval or pear.  Go for a dantier setting like the floral inspirations or halo round diamonds.

It is very important not to overpower, think about the proportions and go for understated and delicate designs, with smaller diamonds. Rounds, Oval and Cushion are very flattering.
